Showing During Pregnancy - What is Normal?

"Is it normal to NOT be showing during pregnancy yet?" Like every woman, every baby is different. That being said, every pregnancy is different. Whether you are showing during pregnancy in the first trimester or you don’t start showing until the third that is perfectly normal. Many times when you start showing varies by body type and the way the baby is lying. Larger women tend to show later then smaller women because they have more fat/body to hide it. Conversely, plenty of smaller framed women have been able to keep their pregnancy a secret for several months without anyone suspecting.

Your doctor will most likely not be concerned with how big or how small your belly is, but will go by your weight gain and the size of the baby. So long as you are gaining enough weight (not too much, not too little) and the baby is the correct size for his or her gestational age, your doctor will probably not be worried.

Most of the time women tend to start showing during pregnancy around the start of the second trimester, usually between the third and fifth months. This is also about the time many women feel their babies move for the first time. Once you are in the third trimester however, the size of your belly will be very important. Your doctor will start measuring your belly with a tape measure. If your belly measures quite different from your last checkup, he/she may have to go for an ultrasound to be sure the baby is thriving and developing okay.

Showing during early pregnancy varies from woman to woman and baby to baby. There really is no "normal" time to show. Typically women begin to show in the second trimester, but many show in the first, and some not until the third. Do not panic if you look differently then your best friend or sister, etc. If your doctor isn’t worried, you shouldn’t be either. Always talk to your doctor if you are concerned about the baby’s growth.
