Pregnancy Weight Gain and You

My pregnancy weight gain... am I too heavy, or too thin? What is normal?

pregnant woman, healthy pregnancy, fit pregnancy

This is a common question pregnant women ask, but cannot be answered in one word. It must be broken down depending on you before your pregnancy. See the chart below for pregnancy weight gain according to body mass.

*IF you are of normal weight before conception, you should gain somewhere between 25-35 pounds throughout your pregnancy.

*IF you are overweight before conception, you should gain somewhere between 15-25 pounds throughout your pregnancy.

*IF you are underweight before conception, you should gain somewhere between 28-40 pounds.

Staying healthy means monitoring your weight gain during pregnancy, keeping it in line or close to what the doctors recommend. If you do not gain enough weight, or you gain too much weight, you and your baby will suffer. Doing pregnancy exercise and taking your prenatal vitamins are also key elements to both of your body’s health. Your pregnancy weight gain is kept in check with at least 30 minutes of walking, following an exercise video, swimming, or whatever safe method you have found to burn extra calories and to tone up your muscles (you will need them for delivery). Other reasons for avoiding too much weight gain would be a lesser chance of:

*hemorrhoids

*varicose veins

*backache

*stretch marks

*fatigue

*indigestion

*shortness of breath

*trouble sleeping

If you are in your first trimester and you have not gained a pound yet, or if you have lost weight, do not be alarmed. Women who suffer with morning sickness do sometimes lose weight at the beginning of their pregnancies, where other women may gain several pounds. But if you are now feeling better and your appetite has returned be sure to eat. Your body and your baby’s body needs the nutrients, calories and fats from the foods that you eat. See Pregnancy Diet to the left, or click on this link.
