Pregnancy Test Sensitivity

Home pregnancy tests are NOT all created equal. The Pregnancy Test Sensitivity varies from test to test and brand to brand.

Some tests are cheap, very effective, easy to read and give early results - while others are expensive and not as reliable or sensitive (meaning the amount of hCG they find present in your urine).

There are a few rules we have invoked when it comes to pregnancy tests (and pregnancy test sensitivity). Rule #1 - Avoid blue dye tests at ALL costs. They are not reliable because they give far too many women false positives.

View our chart of pregnancy test ratings.

Rule #2 - If you are going to test early. Use a sensitive test. Pregnancy test sensitivity--- Use a test which measures as little as 20 hCG. If you are using a test that tests a minimum of 50 hCG/ mIU, you may get false negatives!

And finally, Rule #3 - Spend as little money as possible to get the same result. And yes, it is possible to buy a test for less then $1 and get the same result as a test that costs $10!

***A Special Note Regarding Home Pregnancy Tests / Pregnancy Test Sensitivity:

Implantation occurs typically 6-12 days after ovulation. Any test with a pregnancy test sensitivity above 20 hCG should not be considered “early result” and should not be used until after a missed period.

***Even then for some women it may take a few days to get a positive result, even though they are pregnant.
