Other Methods of Labor Induction
*Walk- moving around
forcing your baby down, getting his/her head in position for birth.
(Movement of hips + gravity = labor). This is also a great tool to use once
your contractions start. It eases the pain and helps you to focus on other
things.
*Sex
- yes the same thing that got pregnant can get the baby out! Sex is great for several reasons; it not only is a great way to express your love for your husband, but there are 2 things that sex does for inducing labor naturally. When a pregnant woman has an orgasm her uterus contracts which if done at the right time can start the labor process. The second way sex can help in inducing labor is that the semen contains prostaglandins which thin out the cervix to allow for dilation. Hospitals have inserts they give pregnant women to ripen or soften their cervix to induce labor, and the insert is nothing more than pig semen (prostaglandins). *Nipple Stimulation- along the same lines as sex, having your husband stimulate your nipples, causes your uterus to contract, and can start the labor process.
*Castor Oil- this should be used only after consulting your physician, and should be used sparsely. Castor oil causes bowel movement and can cause discomfort. The benefit of using castor oil is not only getting cleaned out before delivery, but because it causes diarrhea, it causes contractions of the bowels which can irritate the uterus and cause it to then contract, inducing labor. Do not use this is you are dehydrated, ill, or high risk. An embarrassing side effect can be that you have diarrhea during labor. Yikes!
*Spicy Food- Similar to caster oil, spicy foods irritate your bowels and can cause contractions, but only if your body is ready. (Try this before caster oil. It is much more pleasant.) *Stripping Membranes- If you are past your due date, or then doctors need to induce you, they will strip your membranes, if your body hasn't already. This procedure involves the doctor using his/her finger to remove the membranes around the amniotic sac, causing your body to naturally release hormones that begin the labor process. This procedure can be painful, causing cramping and discomfort. *Breaking the Water- This is a simple, non-painful procedure, where the doctor or midwife actually goes in and breaks the sac around the baby. This does cause contractions to begin, however if they aren't strong enough, the doctor may then administer Pitocin to speed up the process, inducing labor with synthetic oxytocin.
***Using a birth ball during the early stages of labor, makes an easy way for you to be comfortable, in the correct position (using gravity to aid in labor progression), and an easy way for your husband or labor coach to comfortably sit behind you while you rock or bounce on the ball.
