Home Pregnancy Tests

pregnancy test

We have compiled a list of the best home pregnancy tests on the market and how each one compares. Using home pregnancy tests now mean you can find out if you are pregnant days before your period is missed! And many are 99% accurate, which means unless performed incorrectly, you are either positively pregnant, or negatively not!

If however you do take a test and it delivers a negative reading, but you feel sure you are "with child, an expecting mother, knocked up, prego's, have a bun in the oven, etc." wait a few days and test again. If still the reading is negative, contact your physician or midwife and see if you can schedule a pregnancy blood test. This is the single most effective method in determining if indeed you are pregnant. A pregnancy blood test checks to see if the hCG (Human Chorionic Gonadotropin) levels are present, and if so, how present?!? The amount of hCG determines how far along you are. If the home pregnancy test was negative and you are pregnant, you tested too soon, and may not be as far along as you think. Possibly you got your dates wrong, or possibly you ovulated later this month than predicted. Either way, you will have a better idea of exactly how pregnant you really are by having the blood work done.

***As the owner of The Pregnancy Health Center, I am also a mom. I used Early-pregnancy-tests.com's preggy tests, and got a positive 3 days before I got a positive on the more expensive store brands. For me, it was nice to know early, and I have never had an evap with their pregnancy or ovulation tests.

*Rating on a scale of 1-5. 1 being the worst, 5 being the best.

How do the tests work?

All home pregnancy tests use monoclonal antibodies to check your urine for hCG (which again is Human Chorionic Gonadotropin). HCG is the hormone produced by the placenta and begins production the day the embryo embeds itself into the wall of your uterus.

When should you test?

If testing before your missed period, you should use first morning urine, because this has the greatest concentration of hCG. If testing after your period is missed, you can test any time of the day. Avoid drinking large amounts of fluid before testing, and follow the instructions carefully. Using too much or too little urine can affect the results. Also, do not interpret the results until the specified amount of time has passed. You may think you are not pregnant, when SURPRISE, you are!

Note: There are several factors that can affect the results of the home tests. Things such as birth control (pill, patch, shot, ring, etc.), antibiotics, caffeine, alcohol, and previous pregnancy. By previous pregnancy, we are referring to either a miscarriage or birth within the past 9 weeks. If this is the case, you may get a false positive. If you suspect you are pregnant and fall into this category, contact your physician or midwife for possible testing.
