Baby Head Down & Labor

Baby head down means labor is coming, right? Many women when they hit the ninth month of pregnancy begin looking for any sign they can that labor will be coming, and coming soon. Once your baby is head down and engages in your pelvis, your body has begun getting ready for labor, but do not go getting the bubblegum cigars just yet. Just because your baby has engaged does not mean labor is going to happen that day, that week or even that month. Babies tend to turn head down around 33-34 weeks in most women. And most women go into labor between 38-42 weeks of pregnancy, which means there may be several more weeks of sporting a big belly ahead of you.

There are several factors that determine when and if your baby head down will drop/ engage before labor has begun, and those include:

Muscle tone - if you are a well toned woman, your stomach muscles may be working a little too efficiently. Keeping your baby up high and not allowing him/her to descend into your pelvis. Try to relax your stomach muscles to get things moving.
Number of babies - if you have given birth before, baby being head down but not engaged is very common up until the last few days before you give birth. It seems that women who have had previous children will drop and labor in a relatively short period of time of one another.
Size of the baby - if the baby is big he/she may not engage properly. Gestational diabetes is one of the main reasons for this.
Pelvic shape - having a smaller than normal pelvis may make it impossible for your baby to drop, even though baby is head down.

In summary, those who have had babies before, tend to not have their subsequent babies engage until labor is just about to begin. Those women who are first time moms however, may be walking around with a fully engaged baby for several weeks. It all depends on the mother's body, the baby's size and whether or not the baby head down and ready to be born.

If you are trying to kick start labor, there are several things you can do.
